The development history of Huayou Cobalt can be divided into four main stages:
Foundation and Technical Accumulation (2002–2008)
Founded in Quzhou, Zhejiang in 2002, the company initially focused on the R&D and production of cobalt chemicals. During this stage, the company committed to developing core smelting technologies, breaking the technical monopoly of international firms in deep-processed cobalt products. This marked its initial transition from a trading enterprise to a manufacturing company, establishing a solid technical foundation in the cobalt industry.
Resource Integration and Overseas Expansion (2009–2014)
The company began to prioritize its upstream resource segment, actively investing in the development of cobalt and copper resources in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. By establishing an integrated supply chain covering mining, beneficiation, and smelting, the company successfully overcame raw material bottlenecks. It listed on the Main Board of the Shanghai Stock Exchange in 2015, marking the formal establishment of its “Resource-to-Material” integrated strategy.
New Energy Transition and Vertical Integration (2015–2020)
With the explosive growth of the electric vehicle industry, Huayou actively extended its reach into the downstream lithium-ion battery supply chain, entering the sectors of ternary precursors and cathode materials. Through joint ventures with international giants such as LG Chem and POSCO, the company secured stable export channels and successfully integrated into global mainstream power battery supply systems, achieving a comprehensive upgrade of its business structure.
Diversification and Global Deepening (2021–Present)
The company further expanded its resource footprint by making nickel resource development a strategic priority. It invested in large-scale nickel hydrometallurgy projects in Indonesia, achieving a “Cobalt + Nickel” dual-core resource layout. Currently, the company is fully advancing its “Integrated Lithium Battery Materials” strategy, accelerating global production capacity construction, and strengthening technological innovation to meet market demand for solid-state batteries and high-nickel technology pathways.
Huayou Cobalt’s business model is centered on a vertically integrated “resource-material-new energy” layout, driven by four key pillars:
- Upstream Critical Resource Control: By investing in copper-cobalt mines in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and large-scale nickel hydrometallurgy projects in Indonesia, the company secures essential, scarce metals required for battery manufacturing, ensuring supply stability and cost advantages.
- Midstream Advanced Processing and Manufacturing: The mined and refined metals are further processed into cobalt and nickel chemicals, extending into the research, development, and manufacturing of ternary precursors and cathode materials, which are key components for lithium batteries.
- Global Clients and Joint Ventures: Through joint ventures and long-term supply agreements with major global automakers and power battery giants (such as LG Chem and POSCO), the company locks in massive and stable downstream demand.
- Green Circulation and ESG Value Chain: The company actively deploys battery recycling and waste resource reutilization technologies to establish a closed-loop green supply chain, meeting the carbon footprint and sustainability standards demanded by international premium automakers.
